302EFI problem

Hi i have a 1990 Ford Econoline 150 with the 302EFI engine. The engine resently started to have problems starting! it will start upp when the engine is cold but not rigth away and usualy there is dark smoke from the exhaust but when its warmed up it wont start up "not all the time" the starter just turns the motor!! I been told it might be a problem with the wires on the starter and some sugested the timing gear!!!! anyone got an idea ??

Pull the codes and check fuel pressure.. the system should build and hold no less than 39-40psi within a 2-3 cycles of the key, if it never gets that high but holds you could have a weak pump, and if it builds but bleeds off immediately you could have stuck-open injectors or a bad check valve in the fuel delivery module. Also check that there is no fuel in the vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator, if there is the regulator is toast and must be replaced.

You tell about dark smoke.
Is it more black or blue?

Black means: Runs to rich.
It's either too less air (check the filter!) or too much Gasoline

I know the symptoms you describe more like an BMW-Problem.
When they get older (~20 Years) the Injectors become leaky and start dripping after.

If you got blue smoke: Congratulations - you engine is burning oil
Maybe a minor problem like valveshaft seals
or a big problem like piston rings

What plugs, and what gap are they set at? As Conanski stated, check for codes, either with a code reader or the paperclip method. Could be as simple as he said about the fuel pump being weak, and it does happen. Also, if the diaphram for the FPR is ruptured, it's gonna suck fuel in through the vacuum line and give near about the same results.

Should be around 0.50, and just use a standard motorcraft plugs. No need for fancy platinum, etc.

You can use a paperclip method and it's listed in either a Haynes or Chilton manual. Also, check this site for more info.
