Hey guys,Jason(JT250) has a thread running about push rods,I'm wanting more info about them so instead of highjacking his thread I thought I would start my own. OK,he said Matt at gearhead told him the sound he was describing(woh woh woh)was coming from the intake and was likely a bent push rod causing it. Now can we discuss this more as I have noticed the same sound coming from my intake,it's definitely coming from the intake as I removed my 6637 filter and put my stock airbox back on(the tabs are intact and I have the filter sealed off with a thick grease so I know its solid),to quiet it down while on vacation.I don't know when it started it,its kinda like one of those things you stumble across and say to yourself that wasn't like that before..anyway the idle is not what I would call"rough",but it don't seem as smooth as just after my tank mod/FRX install. Thanks for reading this long post and any and all replies are appreciated...Phil
The only way to know for sure is to pull them out, roll them across a metal table (or whatever you have) to make sure the are not bent.
I would say its unlikely any are bent.
Yeah I know to know for sure I'll have to pull them, but the initial info coming from Matt I figured we could have some discussion about the noise from the intake, like I said I just sorta noticed it,but I can't say I noticed when it started doing it..if that makes any sense,I was hoping maybe some of our heavy hitters could elaborate a little..
Could you get a video of the noise? That way we know what you're talking about and to help in this discussion. Describing sounds via text never works out well.
Interesting...I would love to hear the noise as well. I'm doing injectors/cups this week, and a small part of me wants to replace the push rods while I'm in there.
Yeah I'll try to get a video of it in the am,I was also wondering if with the piston at TDC and both valves closed could I check for a certain clearance for a tell tale sign..maybe I'm over thinking it..
If you going to that, you might as well undo the two pedestal bolts and pull the pushrods out.
True..I was just hoping for some more feedback,Jason and Matt may have been on different pages..like I said I just read his thread and started thinking..I'm trying not to hurt myself..lol
you could do this but the lifters should be empty of oil (which yours are not), Only a blatantly obvious bent rod would show up. If it is only slightly bent the preload in the lifter could hide it.
Thanks guys, yeah I know to properly check the push rods they have to come out and take the ol' table roll. But like I said,my truck makes the sound described by JT250(woh woh woh) and it comes from the intake, and I was just wondering if anyone could confirm whether or not a bent push rod could make it have that sorta sound that could be heard through the intake...I know, its like asking Stevie Wonder if its the right shade of blue...
