1976 highboy 428

well thought i had a good deal going but guess not. guy on craigslist here has a 1976 f-250 and its a mess. frame is all cut up and welded on. used a 2 wheel drive steering box to "fix" the powersteering. brackets welded everywhere. the 428 sounded alright but has been sitting for a while. i offerd him 800 for it but he want a thousand. no rims or tires or bed. lots of overspray in the cab. cabs a replacement off a 2 wheel drive also. i would like a highboy also but this one seems a little rough even for me. the 428 is the 66 version out of a mercury. any thoughts. he may have a title for the frame if not its bill of sale. then for me its a parts truck. the hack job on the steering is bad and will need fixed. thanks for you thoughts.

How did you verify this so called 428 as being a 428?

It's yet to be determined if this is a legit 428FE, but i will say the cab/door/fender/hood all look pretty clean and straight (at least in the pic).

ha ha ha I stared at a grand a while back when I first seen that truck. it's a parts truck no doubt! I offered the guy $500 for it a couple week's ago just cuz I could use a few extra part's for my newest project that I hope to have up running by the end of the week.

Sounds like he wants $1000 for the engine and would take offers for the engine + truck.

There is still no documentation or verification that the engine is indeed a 428.

Need to check the stroke.

well the owner says hes got other offers for it but i dont think so. he called twice yesterday and once this morning. the fenders have the normal rust and so do the cab mounts. the beds long gone and the cab is well lots of overspray. what worries me is he really doesnt have a title for the whole truck just the frame. also the front bumper horns are missing. looks like they cut them off when doing the steering box swap.

The VIN is stamped on the frame which is the only thing that matters.

I haven't looked at the truck in a hell of a while does the 428 even turn over? from the pic's it look's like those valve cover's have been sitting out in the open weather for a while. They didn't look as weather beaten last time I seen the truck.
I'd prolly dump the cut up frame so who really care's if he's got title or not. Hell who's ever gonna look at the frame VIN # anyway? it's not like you can read it unless you take the cab off.

The frame stamp is in 2 places. One under the cab and the other is on the passenger rail between the core support and spring perch.
