I used summit racing's 600 cfm carb on my 400 and I'm very pleased with it over all. Trucks got massive power good mileage and it starts great. There also cheaper that most other carbs. Good luck.

Stock intake? I'm looking for alternatives to the factory 2150 but can't afford to replace carb and intake at once. Really need to get better mileage.
I've been using a Carter 625 with similar mods....no complaints. I ran an Eddy 750 for a while and didn't notice anything different, so I went back to the 625. I think if you stay in the 600-650 cfm range you will be fine. As for carb brand, that's all a matter of preference.
I think a 750 is a little big on a 400, but that is my $.02. I like holleys, they run pretty good. Mine have all been really awesome for an all around carb. One thing to remember with holleys truck avengers is that holley will warn to NOT tow at all with these carbs. I towed a little bit with mine, and it seemed to lean out real easily. Something with the check weights for the extreme angle operation. Edelbrocks work decent all around. I never saw the performance out of an edelbrock i got from a holley. I like holleys 600 or 650 cfm carbs, they work really well and are easily scored at a junk yard, throw a kit in one and go. I know a holley of the same cfm rating will out perform an edelbrock, especially in the 750 cfm and up. However, if you don't have a race car, edelbrocks drive down the road really nice. Good luck.
