Oil question - sorry

Hate to do this but could not find info via search or manual

Do I check the oil when it's cold or hot?

I am assuming cold as then it would be fully drained into the pan

Thanks

Cold engine for the reasons you stated. And not to state the obvious but make sure the surface your truck is on is flat.

Because of the difficulty of reading the dipstick I usually check my oil after the truck sits overnight. You can check it anytime as long as you can read the dipstick keeping in mind that oil expands some when it is hot. I think you will find your main problem is reading the dipstick no matter what time you choose. If you check it warm let the truck sit for a while and it wil make the process easier. One of my complaints about the truck is the dipstick.

The oil dipstick is a poor design... You can't tell in detail the actual oil level, but I guess it's good enough to tell you got oil in the sump.

Thanks guys

Regarding the dipstick design - yeah it's a little floppy

Plus I needed to get a step ladder to reach and more important guide back

checking oil

Warm and it should be near the full mark.

Cold and it should be about 1/2 way.

They are right about the poor design for checking the oil. Difficult to get to and difficult to read.

I was always told to check it when it was warm. Let it set like while you do a fill-up and then check it.

Same as others, I check mine cold for the best results with this engine.
I still have the original twisted metal dipstick.

Ford says to wait at least 20 minutes after engine shutdown but probably doesn't mean too much when some techs don't follow that note.

I suspect the twisted metal dipstick is easy to read?

I would say it could be better

I have clean oil so it was a little difficult to discern, darker oil would show up better

The dipstick reading area did not look like the picture in the manual - at least to me

It is but having not held the new new cable style in my hand, I can't compare.
Cold, I can get two good readings (2nd, 3rd pulls) if needed.
It is difficult to get a level after a 30 min soak from running tho.

It is very floppy as i mentioned earlier - pulls out easily but it is like pushing a rope going back in.

and due to some ****-retentiveness I did compare the actual dipstick reading area to that in the manual and they do match

Dipstick reading close up
