Injector blower?

What is the purpose of the injector blower? Read somewhere its really just dead weight and rust out or seizes. It said just to remove it; is this true?

The purpose of the injector blower is to cool the injectors and fuel rail after the engine shuts down to prevent vapor lock or coking of the injectors.

Oh ok. So is it a bad idea to get rid of it? Why did ford do away with it on other 4.9L then?

Dunno, I don't know enough about it to say why one version has it and others don't. I will say that they must have thought they needed it in that application for some reason because those injector blower fans and the associated circuitry weren't the cheapest things in the world. Nobody installs those things without a good reason or just because they felt like it; there are more than a few cars that should have had them installed that didn't.

I believe it was done away with when the fuel pressure spec was increased as a "better" means to eliminate the potential for vapor lock. I'm not exactly sure what the date of the change was - best guess is '89.

I have an 89 and I still have it. Maybe late 89? Still curious as to whether anyone has gotten rid of it and had problems after. My system, the metal tube especially, is pretty rusty and wanted to just get rid of it if possible. If I have to keep it I'll just have to rehab it I guess.

Wait, are you talking about the "smog pump" and associated plumbing, including the ~1" diameter rail with ports for each cylinder? That's something entirely different from the cooling fan.

No the injected blower. The pipe sits just under the intake manifold and is connected with a rubber tube to the disc shaped blower motor which has a tube on the other end that goes towards the back of the engine bay in order to suck up cool air.

Ah, okay. I've never seen one so wasn't too sure what they looked like.
