Rough Idle After Engine Gets Hot

Hi,
I have a 2002 F350 7.3l 4x4 with about 125,000 miles on it.
After the engine reaches a certain temperature, it starts having hicups from time to time and sometimes stalls. It restarts just fine and after a few seconds gets hicups again. This problem is intermittent. Seems like the hotter the engine as more hicups it gets. It also happens while driving. I replaced the cam shaft positioning sensor (O'Reileys) but didn't solve the problem. The check engine light comes on and goes off again. There are no codes stored in the memory.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to FTE!

If the CEL came on, there are codes in there. Our trucks need a code reader to read them. Most of the generic readers at the parts stores can't read them.

How long have you had the truck?

How recent was the oil changed? And what type of oil?

The cam sensors are very picky devices. You need to have a Ford or International sensor. The ones available through the other parts stores are known for not working properly.

I agree with trying a Ford/International CPS...

But if that fails, I'd look at a couple things. Definately get your hands on a good scanner that can pull PSD codes.

First, check the ICP sensor...see if it runs better with it unplugged, and check the plug for signs of oil.

Another thing would be the IPR can act up (sticks) and cause symptoms like you describe.

Another thing to look into is the UVCH.... a lose/failing plug could cause those problems as well. ($.50 Cent Mod.)

Hi CampSpringsJohn,

I have the truck since 2006 and do oil changes regulary. last oil / filter change was done 2 weeks ago and I use the Castrol Diesel 5W40 Oil.

It all started with an oil leak which appeared to come from the rear main seal, only to find out that it actually came from the hpop plug right under the fuel bowl. I replaced the o-ring and it stopped the oil leak. Now, I am leaking a little bit of diesel from the bowl drain valve. I will replace the o-rings of the valve today and will get me another cam shaft sensor from the dealer...

Hi ToMang07,

I'll try to locate and unplug the ICP sensor first and see what happens.
The truck never gave me any problems and is very reliable so I really hope that it is only a minor issue. Thanks for the input. i will post as soon as I figure anything out.

I hope you used a Ford o-ring along with their loctite! Ask me how I know!

When you change the cam sensor, be sure to check the connection/plug.

ToMang07 lists some other possibilities.

Is 5W-40 good in the summer time? I know some run it year round. Have you used this all the time? I'm wondering if the oil could be foaming up.

What oil would you prefer? Temps here can reach 100F and up.
Yes, I got the O-Ring from local dealer.

5/40 should be fine, as long as it's diesel rated and has no extra "additives."

OK. I thought Castrol was good oil. Just wasn't sure about the 5w though.

Ok guys,
I disconnected the ICP sensor and the problem went away. Do I need a new one or does it help to clean it? Thank you so much for your expertise. I just leave that new cam sensor in since it seems to run fine but keep the old one on hand.

You guys are awesome,
thanks a bunch...

Manni
