Dimensions for speakers

I would like to replace the speakers in the front doors. Does anybody know the size of the speakers. (Distance between holes).

Thanks!

I know the 92-96 trucks have 6 1/2" round speakers.

6 1/2" round in the doors for '80-96. The old dash speaker and all the rear speakers are 5x7" / 6x8".

It's a special size.

6.5" circular.

I ended up with some Pioneer speakers that fit right.

there are 4 mounting holes, but they are not in a perfect square...

The pioneers I got at best buy are like 45 bucks. They are working well so far.

The holes in the basket matched up with the factory holes.

Total install time was 45 minutes, which included cutting off the connectors, soldering them and door panel removal/installation.

Thanks to all of you

The suggestion for crutchfield.com was great. It will slip right into my favorites!

just for illustration purposes:

These are my exact speakers.

I had to bend the corner tabs inward, but these speakers fit. I had bought another set of 6.5" speakers beforehand, and they were too large. (Jensen brand)

These pioneer ones sound OK, and they are easy to install. They aren't as deep, sizewise as other speakers, but since they are mounted in the dead area under the wing windows, that's probably not an issue with the roll-down window hitting them.

Anyway... Just thought I'd share, so you don't have to return a different kind of speaker, or cut metal on your doors.

I NEVER cut speaker wires, that way when I go to sell, or trade the vehilce in, I can remove my speakers, and put the factory ones back in. I would leave the factory wires alone and run new ones. The ford speakers are all COMMON ground so you need to run new wire anyways or you will fry the head (radio).

I was lazy and cut them. as for frying the head unit, so far so good

(using a pioneer CD player headunit)

as for the pioneer speakers.. I don't want them if I sell the truck, and the CD player would most likely stay in, to make it a more attractive purchase to the future owner.

Plus, all that stuff will be outdated when i sell the truck. I have a garage full of old audio equipment, that I should have just given away

I was not aware of the common ground though, being that there are two seperate wires running to the head unit and each speaker.

(suggesting that unless grounded to the chassis, they don't share the ground between left and right sides)

If you get speakers from crutchfield, they will send you a plug in harness so you don't have to cut into factory wiring, you just plug in. As for the common ground thing, I don't think that's right, because there was a ground wire at the radio harness for each of the speaker leads in my truck. I don't see how any radio could use a common ground system effectively. I ran the factory speakers off an aftermarket head until one of the speakers broke. I didn't trust the Ford speaker wiring when I added aftermarket speakers. The aftermarket wires can carry more current than factory and will sound better. When I got my amp, I rewired them again, this time with 16 guage speaker wire. It all depends on what quality of sound you are interested in. Factory wiring will do fine for most aftermarket speakers and head units, and if you get plug in wiring harnesses for both the head unit and the speakers, you can still put the factory stuff back in if the need ever arises.
