The outside handle on the driver door of my '92 F-150 doesn't work. We took the panel off and see what the problem is. When I push the outside handle button in, nothing happens. We believe the rod connecting it to the door latch is frozen op with rust. Is there a way to repair this without replacing the whole door?
My '92 F-150 had the same problem a couple of years ago. It was a broken cable between the door handle and door latch. I purchased the new cable from a local Ford dealer.
fjones is talking about the INside handle. For the outside, just follow the operating rod down to the latch mechanism. It's retained by a Z-bend there. If you can't find it at the pushbutton, it's just a broken plastic clip (the most likely cause). It's the same as the ones you'll see in these photos.
Thanks for your help, but the rod is there, and when i push in on the outside button, the rod tries to go down, but it can't. I think it's stuck up with rust in the actual locking mechanism. i looked on the other door to see how it works, and is looks like it needs to be freed up. I soaked it in WD-40 and other rust busters this morning.
