Hey All...I posted this on another part of the forum but was advised to post here as well...
so...just joined so I could possibly find out some needed info about a truck I am thinking about purchasing. The truck in question is a 2006 F350 with the 6.0. I have heard LOTS of bad things about this engine but also LOTS of very positive things as well. The one thing that scares me is the truck as 171K miles on it. Pretty high for a 2006 by normal standards but being that it's a diesel should this be something concerning? the truck looks to be in very good shape and the Carfax is pretty clean. I have not run an Oasis but am hoping to get one prior to purchase. The "dealer" is asking $20K for the truck but I will hopefully not be paying that (If he won't budge I won't buy!)

Any thoughts about this truck?
Thanks, Jason

The price shouldn't be more that $15k for a truck w/ that mileage - even with everything working properly. IMO injectors aren't good for more than 250k miles (not to count on anyway) - and they are expensive.

Thanks bismic...so are you saying to avoid this truck or just make darn sure it's in working order. I should have also stated that I will NOT be towing anything super heavy..I have a boat that is about 4000#, but it has been used to tow 5th wheel at some point in it's lifetime.

Also - get an OASIS report from the dealership.

Also get a scangaugeII for around $160 (you can always sell it for $100 or so if you don't end up buying a 6.0L).

Here is a thread to read over:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...used-6-0l.html

Actually, I am saying you can probab;y get a 2006 trucks for around $21k-$22k that only has 70k miles on it (private party). Those are better buys IMO. But if this is a good truck and you can talk them down, it may be worth it. You just need to plan on some expenses - and if they don't happen ............ well then, you are ahead of the game.

Thanks again bismic! I read that thread as well as many others on here and other forums and feel like I have a lot better knowledge going in. I am just so nervous that even after all the "research" and going over of the prospect truck that I'll have major problems. There is no gaurantee that I will or won't so that is the worry. From what I've read along these pages it sounds like even if I can do most of the mods/repairs on my own it is still not cheap, is that your opinon as well?

Just trying to make the most informed decision I can as my wife will literally KILL me if I get "another POS truck", lol.

I will be honest with you here, anything with 170K miles on it is pretty well worn out in so many areas.
Your wife is going to wind up killing you !!

Keep looking and get one in the 50-70K mile range, they are out there. Be patient and get something that's not going to knot up your stomach because of the unknowns.
Like Bismic said 20K for a truck with 170K miles on it IS Just plain too much, and even if they come down to 15k dollars you still bought a truck with 170K miles on it.

Keep Looking, when you see a lower milage truck get a Oasis report from Ford and buy a ScanguageII from Auto Zone or wherever and you can see the health of the engine.

When you get to that point everyone here will help you through how to set up the scanguage and what to look at to see EXACTLY how good of a truck you are buying.

Actually, you SHOULD buy the Scan Gauge NOW and be ready for whatEVER truck you buy. They do work on more than just Fords too!!! Hook it up for the test drive and see what it says.... then (if it is a Ford) we can help you faster.

Keep looking and you will find yourself a nice truck. 2006 and 2007 are what I would be looking for as far as the 6.0 goes. January 2006 there were some upgrades with the introduction of the commonization engine and Bismic wrote a article on the 06 and later benefits.
Whatever year you choose go for lower miles and a (Service Record) that you can see that someone took care of it. Whether dealer maint records or receipts for filters and oil, some kind of proof it was maintained.

You are on the Best Forum for the 6.0 PowerStroke PERIOD!!! These guys will steer you right...............

There is nothing wrong with purchasing a 100k + mileage truck just make sure that you look it over completely and leave extra cushion room in the price to do all the stuff that you have to assume the previous owner didn't do. Like differential clean and inspect etc.... Keep in mind there are quite a few of these trucks out there with 250k+ miles so one with 100K still has a lot of life in it. To to honest I would rather have a 05 with 100k miles than a 05 with 10k miles.... 10k you may end up with turbo replacement.... or rebuilding engine cause of dried out seals..... these trucks like to run. It also depends on what the truck did.... 30k miles on the farm (or offroading in the mud) is probably the equivilant of 100k on the road. Was it a daily driving hauling 20k construction trailers or did it haul the 5th wheel toy hauler once a year on vacation.... It is a complex balance with no real right or wrong..... in the end it really comes down to BUY THE ONE YOU LIKE!!!!! The one that has the right blend for you....
