changeing lifters,have ?

Steve Christ's book has a section that says to rotate your motor until you see the " xx " mark on the front damper, this will be where none of the valves will be at full lift (relates to bolting down the rocker arms).I have looked, and mine dosen't have those xx's.So my question to you guys, how do I come up with something simular?Whats the best way to set the rocker arm adjustment (adjustable r/a's with hyd lifters) for initial adjustment? I have some lifters that are prety clackity from time to time, what should I be looking for before teardown to get a better handle on this? Do you normally try to prime the lifters,or just drop them in and use an oil pump prime hooked up to a drill to get the oil in them.TIA for any/all info.Al Oh yea, allmost forgot, the motors a 63 390.

Hi,

I won't be much help here but, ....if I recall correctly you take the dampener about 45* past TDC.

As for pre lubing the lifters I place them in Oil and use a push rod to compress them. Only take about 5 strokes to get the oil in.

I have always set the lash at TDC on the firing stroke on each cylinder. Start at #1's TDC firing stroke, set it, then rotate the crank 1/4 turn for each cylinder, following the firing order.

New lifters, follow the Christ book and adjust to 0.10. Then prime it using a drill. Don't prime it first, these are a PITA to collapse the lifters to do the adjustment. If you have ran the engine put it on TDC number one, rotate the pushrod between your thumb and index fingers and tighten the adjuster until you feel resistance then give it a quarter turn. Follow the adjusting sequence in the Christ book. Rotate the engine once to TDC on six and repeat the process. I pull all the plugs and rotate the engine with the starter to be sure all the lifters are pumped up. This trick works to find a noisy lifter, bent push rod or worn rocker assembly as well.

Lee's right, rotate the damper 45* past TDC and that's where the "xx" would have been. This point is were none of the valves are at full lift.
