Yesterday I was checking the lights on my race trailer that I pull with my 76 F250, with the trailer plugged in, I pulled the head light switch on; no lights on the trailer and all the lights on the truck except the head lights were off.
I unplugged the trailer ; no change. Then I starter the truck; all the lights on the truck came on. So I plugged the trailer in and they all work also. So I turn off the trucks engine and lights stay on. Then when I turned the lights off to fix a blub on the trailer and go to turn on the light again, something all over again.
Any ideas?
The circuit in question (running lights) leaves the headlight switch as a BROWN wire and is independent of the headlights. The only thing that would make sense is a faulty headlight switch, and starting the truck may have jostled it enough to kick on. Power in and out of the headlight switch is completely independent of the ignition switch assuming your wiring has not been modified.
The head lights may have a breaker instead of a fuse and with a short in the trailer wiring it may be tripping and trying to reset itself. It may be a short that is small and maybe not happening every time. My $ 0.02 worth.___
