The truck is a 2002 F-250 Supercab, long box, 5.4L, 4x2. Through the process of elimination I have pretty much reduced the source of my ongoing cruise control problem to a bad servo. Even the ones from the salvage yards are a little pricey and since electronic items are not returnable I don't want to just start throwing parts at this thing.
So, two questions;
1. Is there a way to bench test the servo?
2. How interchangeable are the servos? Are they a generic item or are they unique to each year/model/engine/transmission combination?
I never did get an answer to this. I eventually found a used one with the right part number which solved my problem. When I took my original apart I found that it had seized. I no longer have that truck but I do remember that the part number only applied to two one three years of 4x2 F-250's and Excursions with the 5.4 engine. There were tons of used ones out there for 4x4's but hardly anything for 4x2's. Sorry I can't be of any more help than I originally received here.
Thanks. One quick question, when you say it seized, how did you determine that? I took the cover off of my servo and examined the motor inside and it nearly impossible to move the gears.
First of all I eliminated all the other things that were suggested on this forum and the only thing left that it could have been was the servo. After that I figured I had nothing to lose as I already had a replacement installed that was working so it was essentially destructive testing of the original unit. If I remember correctly you have to break a couple of things to get the motor out. Don't really know why it was seized, even though I am in Ontario the truck was rarely exposed to road salt and the inside of the unit was clean when I opened it up.
Yeah, same story here. I have a full set of factory service manuals and wiring diagrams. I have been over my 99 F250 from top to bottom and I cant find a single issue. Every button works, every switch works, every sensor works, and all the circuits and grounds are well within spec.
I have been looking at ebay and it appears that there are several vendors selling various Ford Cruise control servos. For instance, there's currently a guy selling 100% new 2000-2003 Ford Taurus servos for $35 shipped. In comparison, the correct servo for my 99 F250 V10 4x4 is about $400! Since the servos are identical in appearance, I decided to research the electrical configuration to see if the two could be swapped. Armed with both the internet and a few other years worth of Ford factory service manuals / wiring diagrams, I have reviewed a ton of information and we may have a winner!
First, it appears that the 99 Super Duty trucks (like the one I have) are unique in that they don't have an output wire from the servo to the gauge cluster. If you look at the 2002 Super Duty diagrams, servo connector pin 1 is used for an output to turn on the dashboard cruise set light. Every other cruise control servo pin appears to be the same between the 1999 and 2002 diagrams. In addition, the 2000-2003 Ford Taurus cruise control servo wiring appears to be identical in every way to the 2002 Super Duty trucks.
Keep in mind, just because the wiring is identical doesn't mean that the programming is identical. So thats the million dollar (or at least the $365) question, do you guys think that the programming is different?
EDIT, I have confirmed that the programming is NOT different and that the other module works perfectly!
