I was recently pulling a gooseneck trailer, and I had the OD off, and on mostly city streets. I had only went about 2 miles and had to stop at a stop light. The truck wanted to keep going as if a manual transmission and I had not pushed in the clutch, it was bucking and finally quit. When the light changed it went through the shifts normally. I have the automatic. I had not gone over maybe 40mph of maybe less. Today I pulled the same trailer back to where I borrowed it and this symptom occurred again. Could it be the torque converter locked up and not unlocking when I was slowing to a stop? If so, what do I need to do? Or alternately, what else could cause this? I have about 129k miles on the clock, and normally I don't haul anything. I would appreciate any and all suggestions or remedies.
Best thing to do is to get the codes read and see if anything shows up. With our trucks you will need to either A) take it to a shop, or B) find someone with the Ford Enhanced Auto Enginuity tool. I had a member on here help me out years ago with some live datalogging and he wouldn't take cash, so I treated him to dinner each time he helped me out. Shop charges are $75 or more for one scan. Dinner cost me $60ish and I made a new friend. Helluva deal.
Sounds like the torq convertor didn't unlock unless you foot hit the throttle the same time it hit the brake. It dose happen. That said, do you have a lock up switch for the convertor that was left on. Have it scaned, that should tell the story. I never heard this one before, but have heard people, even me, stepping on the throttle at the same time.
Your torque converter is locking when it shouldn't be locking. There are several things that can cause that.
Low trans fluid
Loose/missing internal filter
Sticking torque converter control valve
Sticking torque converter clutch solenoid
Short in the wire to the torque converter clutch solenoid
Worn seals
Weak/worn pump
Bad torque converter
I did not step on the throttle and brake at the same time, and No I do not have a switch to lockup the torque Converter. I was only moving about 10 mph and gradually braking when I experienced this.
Can a Ford dealer do the scan? I hate to go to them. I am in Albuquerque, NM so I would appreciate it if anybody has info on a shop that can scan it. I just moved here so I haven't had a chance to make any contacts with shops.
