What ever paint you decide to use, before you put it on the bare metal, treat any remaining rust with rust converter or reformer (even sandblasting can leave residual rust in small pits, in seams and under/around fasteners) The rust reformer is made by Rustoleum and is available in rattle cans or as liquid to be wiped or brushed on at you favorite big box DIY store. IT IS NOT A PAINT! It goes on as a thin clear liquid and immediately chemically reacts with any trace of rust, turning it to an inert hard black compound. Rust is like a cancer, once it is present even in minute amounts it will continue to grow, even under traditional paint products. The rust converter is chemo therapy, wiping out the rust so it can't return. it will penetrate deep into seams and under fasteners. Once dry and cured it can be overcoated with any paint or coating you desire. It really works, and is highly recommended!

Great recommendation!

I am about to start on this same venture. Is POR as strong as powder coating?

What prep should I do before sending to the powder coater? bare metal, and rust reformer?

What are the general cost of powder coating a frame? 300-600?

My experience is POR-15 is tougher then powder coating. And if you use their Hardnose black over the POR-15 it's even tougher. That's what my project is going to get.

Powder coating does and will chip. And once you get a rock chip in powder coating you will get rust and it will creep under the surrounding powder coating. And there is no touching up powder coating.

that's great to know. I think I'll go the Hard-nose route.

If you are going to powder coat the frame, be sure you have done a complete test build of the entire truck first down to the last bolt and nut, then and only then completely disassemble and send to PC. As stated you cannot touch up PC, so if you PC first then need to trim a bracket, do a weld or even drill a hole during final assembly, you'll have to disassemble it all again, have the PC completely stripped (more difficult and expensive than stripping paint) and the PC completely redone. My suggestion would be to leave PC of frames to the pros building high $$ show vehicles.
