What is the best product to use for rust proofing the body of my 1978 F100? I will be having the body stripped down to bare metal for a complete respray, I will be driving this truck till I die and I don't want to see any more rust ever again. The paint job will be an expensive one too, shes getting a complete restoration. I will be getting the frame powdercoated.
Are you sure you want to powder coat the frame? I think I would prefer something that can be touched up if necessary. If powder coat starts to lift etc then is it going to need to be blasted again.
There is a lot of good alternatives. Remember they were painted pretty poorly from the factory. Blasting and a good epoxy and paint would last a really long time.
POR-15 is a good product. I have read some threads disputing this but my results are pretty good. You simply have to follow their instructions to the 't' to get it applied correctly.
My frame is powdercoated and while I don't have any issues yet, I would not do it again due it removing the possibility of future modifications. You can't just touch it up.
I had to dril several new holes during the resto.
I like the coating and it turned out really nice and I think the coating has it's place....just not on the frame.
I would focus more on getting the inner body cavities sealed. You'll have problems there before anything else starts to rust.
I normally use Ospho so I can spray it into the cavities but I recently purchased Eastwoods cavity gun and sealant. I have not got around to trying it out yet though. Ospho is supposed to be topcoated.
Rust is going to happen. At least in my neck of the woods.
I second using southern polyurethanes epoxy primer. You can just spray the black epoxy over your blasted frame and it'll last or you can top coat it with single stage black acrylic urethane.
I love the epoxy primers over surfaces that are not quiet clean, but for striped and clean metal, I like the self etching primers because it forms a bond with the bare metal. For dirty or painted surface self etching primers are worthless.
Most major automotive paint companys make self etching primers, call them or read their recomendations for application.
the por-15 is a good chassis coat, but cannot be applied anywhere it will see sunlight as it has NO uv pertection.
You can but according to the manufacturer it will not be pretty and glossy any more; it will still protect. they suggest painting it starting with a self etching primer.

That's not true. My whole truck is going to get a coat of POR-15 inside and out. You just prime and paint over it. The top coat of paint gives you the UV protection. Think of the POR-15 more as a sealer then a paint.
