I have a definate antifreeze leak. I can't see exactly where it's coming from but it's leaking behind the dampner pulley, I assume coming from the water pump above.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has changed a water pump on a early 99 7.3. with 133k on it. Cost of the pump to do it your self or cost of repair from a shop would give me some helpful information.
Pretty simple swap, removal of the fan clutch can be the toughest part, you can rent tools to help from parts stores. Or an air chisel works well on the large nut. Personally I use vise grips on the water pump pulley lip, and allow the motor to hold it and just loosen with a large wrench.
Being that the OP said E99 there's more to that than just changing it like the later rigs.
Oops. Missed the "early". I checked his sig and it just said 99. Although I have heard of people running ELC in the e99 without problems, I wouldnt take the risk personally.
I bought a Airtex brand from Rock auto. Com, would also reccomend the motorcraft one from Clay. Simple change. I bought the coolant filter system and aluminum thermostat housing from dieselsite.com. The stock housing is very thin and seems to be a real pain to get resealed. After the change which is pretty straight forward and flush of coolant I wasnt brave enough to go with the red stuff, you need to make sure and get some test strips from your local parts store to check the SCA level in the coolant. There is a product called NAPA cool that I used and you have to add enough to the overflow tank to get the levels right. Not hard just a few extra steps and some extra expense. There is a real good write up on it. I will try to dig it up for ya. Nothing to be afraid of on the e99 just a few extra steps.
I am actually on the road about 900 miles from home camping in Wyoming. I will call Clay tomorrow and see if the water pump can be shipped here by Friday to the campground.
I am also wondering if I could get home with the small leak? It would not be a bad idea to have the water pump on hand just in case...
I wouldn't try it. When mine started leaking it was no time before it started gushing!!! Would could always just change the pump right now and flush and do the other stuff when you get home. Can be done with limited tools.
I appreciate that but I don't even have the pump yet. I drove the truck for two hours today in town. When I got back to camp I climbed under to see how it looked and it's all dried up with no leak evident. The coolant tank has dropped about two inches from the full mark where it was the other day when I added a little over half a gallon of coolant. Almost seems it drops to a certain level then stops leaking??
What does the special fan nut tool look like? I don't think my wifi signal is strong enough to watch the video but I will give it a shot.

For what it's worth I drove around for a week at 100+ miles per day when I had my leak. I lost about a gallon per day and replaced it every day. I also carried lots of water with me. Would I do it again? Probably not. But I had a leak, the water pump hadn't stopped pumping. So as long as I kept fluid in there it was fine. Make your own decision but like I said, I wouldn't do it again. I only did it because I had a slammed work week that week.
