So, my passenger-side lockout has been giving me a hell of a time...
If I just lock it and drive forward (in 2wd) when I stop to free it, it will turn slightly but will not free up. If I loosen all the little torx heads that hold it in, It will free and lock (not the smoothest, but it will do it) but the whole hub will rotate. I'd really like to be able to keep the Ford lockouts rather than replacing them with some Warn ones, but right now this lockout is really irritating me. Anyone else have an issue like this? Btw, the drivers side hub is fine...
I just got through repacking and adjusting my wheel bearings and had to disassemble my Ford hubs to do this. When I got to the drivers side as I was putting it together and tightening the allen screws, the hub ring was rotating on me as well. The passenger side didnt do this so I was scratching my head as to why. I took the head off again and immediately saw my mistake, I had put the internal snap ring on behind the outer clutch retaining ring instead of outside of it, where its supposed to go. Your snap ring may be broken or missing or even placed wrong like I did mine. I suggest you get a manual and take your hub apart, sounds like it may need some maintenance. They really arent hard to work on if you have the info.
Thats a great manual, should come in handy for the OP. I didnt discard anything like the manual says though lol, I just cleaned it, relubed and reassembled. One thing, my passenger side drive gear and clutch gear was a one piece affair, they would seperate but not come apart if that makes sense, the drivers side would completely separate; two pieces. The drivers side showed more wear as well, possibly the pass. side had been replaced?
