tonight i locked myself out of my house. lol. but i did have my truck keys and some tools so started messing around with my truck and found that my locking hubs were loose. i tightened the passenger side and it was just fine, but the drivers side when i tightened it would move back and fourth about 1/16 inch. and when i would lock the hub in and move the axle shaft by hand the hub would move the 1/16 and stop. kind of hard to explain.
how would i fix this take it apart and put a shim behind it?
i have no clue. i couldn't get the drivers side off because a bolt head is rounded off. what does the locking ring look like when i take it off.
this is the first 4wd i have owned so i have no clue how this thing looks or works, so pardon my ignorance.

Here's a picture of the assembly in a manual lockout:
The lock ring is a large ring with a portion cut out that snaps into a groove in the hub housing to prevent the lockout assembly from sliding out. After you remove the lockout cap this is the first piece to come out. Here is a picture of an auto hub, the lock ring on the manual looks just like this one:
last night when i took the passenger side off the only thing that came off was the cap. it had three little prongs sticking out from it with a bunch of other stuff. inside of the hub there was (what i could see) a spline with a snap ring and something around the spline that the three little prongs went into. how do i go about taking this all out, do i have to remove the snap ring to get it out, or does it just come out.
There should be snap rings in there... Maybe the prior owner forgot to put them in... That would explain why they are falling out. What kind of hubs are these?
i just finished taking the passenger side apart and it had all the parts. and it still has the front to back movement. i figure that either this is normal or it is time to retire these hubs and get a new set.
i looked while i had them apart for a name to be stamped on it, to see who made them but i didn't find anything.
It doesn't make sense to me how the hub could be sliding in and out if all the lockrings and snap rings are in place... You might just need to replace them...
