Just got my 97 Expedition XLT back after being stationed in Hawaii. The Clarion POS 6 CD changer took a dump on me so I'm going to give Big Red a face lift. My questions are these: which double DIN kit should I use to install the new receiver, which brand receiver fits best into double DIN (preferrably with AUX output), and where is the amp and subwoofer? Also, does the 97 Expedition XLT come stock with amp/sub? Any experienced help would help.

All double dins receivers are the same size, there's not one that fits any better than another. I've put Pioneers in both my wife's 97 and my 99 which I've since sold. If your expy came with a subwoofer it would be located in the back of the vehicle on the passenger side, I'm not sure if the XLT came with one or not, I know our EB did. The amp for the sub is built into it. As far as the double din kit you need, I don't remember right off hand the one that I used. If you go to your local car stereo dealer they can get you lined up on the kit and wiring harness adapters you need for your install. Also some modifications to your dash will need to be made for a double din to fit.
