Heading in a different direction than my previous post.
I have a 97 expy xlt "premium sound" cassette with the cd changer control, but no cd changer or subs or anything...basic 4 spkr. system. I want to hook up my mp3 player to some RCA inputs. There are inline units available from http://www.installer.com/aux/index.html, (scroll down about 1/4 of hte page to get to the Ford ones, but I have NO idea which one I need. Does anyone have any experience with these ? Which one I need ? Where to get it ? There seem to be a lot of different models available based on how many pins the connectors on the back of the head unit have...LOL...I'm lost here.
If you dont have a sub you dont have the MACH premium audio system which was only offered on the Eddie Bauer models. Look for the one that fits your year range and doesnt say premium audio.
no, no... don't get me wrong. There is just a LOT of crosstalk and miscommunication in trying to get this done.... What I REALLY need to know is how many pins are on the rear of my deck... I got an email from www.installer.com asking me this, as they have AUX in adaptors for 12, 18, 18, 20 pin decks. LOL....it's just ALL too confusing.
I suppose what I will need to do, is buy the deck puller tool, yank it, count the pins and maybe take a picture of the back of the deck to send them to make sure I get the right adaptor...
So... How do you get the dash apart to get the deck out ? Any help would be appreciated.
Ok. The dash should come apart easily. I dont know weather or not your rig is 4x4, if it is then you have to be careful when removing the radio. In order to get the deck off you need to remove the center bezel which surrounds the radio and vents. Like I said before if you have a 4x4 selector on the left side of this bezel you need to unplug that when you remove it. It should pop off with some gentle prying with a small screwdriver or knife...
Then you can use theose radio puller tools and stick them into the opposite ends of the radio and as you spread them apart gently pull back on the radio. It should come out and expose the wiring that you were looking for. I hope this helps! Keep us updated on your progress. Good Luck!!!
I built a set out of a coat hanger. Cut 2 pieces of the coat hanger about 6 inches long. Bend each into a U such that the end points are the same distance apart as the holes you can see on each side of the radio. On the side that would face up if they were laying flat on a table, about 1/8 of an inch from the ends, file some very small notches (3-4 firm runs of a file will be enough). With the filed notches facing each other, push one into the holes on each side of the radio until you feel them click, press out just enough to keep from actually putting a permanent bend in the wire and pull. Out comes the radio Lot cheaper than the "professional" ones.
So, What type of connection is in the back, I have the same exact system you do, and would like to know which pins are in the back of the stock radio so i can replace another factory ford cd player..
