I have a 92 Ford Ranger 4.0 engine with 4 wheel drive, stx.
For like a week I couldn't get into 3rd gear, and then all of a sudden I couldn't get it into any gear, neutral now is in gear? Don't know what gear.when the problem started it made a noise when the clutch was out. A friend who is a back yard mechanic say's he thinks it is the transmission. What is the earliest year make will match up? And does anyone else think that this is the problem?
It sounds very similar to my problem. It started with being hard to shift into first then it started making a high pitched whining sound then rattling while in nuetral and finally grinding. It turns out that the M5R1/M5R2 series have a fluid leak problem that if not corrected will trash your tranny. The only way to find out is to drop the tranny and pull the top plate off and have a look inside. Or it may just be your hydraulics have gone out. Do you still "feel" your clutch? If you can't that may be where the problem lies. I'm learning a great deal about my transmission at the moment. As I learn more I'll be happy to share.
Thanks for the reply. Yes I still have the clutch, and I will take your advise and drop the tranny this weekend. Thanks for sharing! I'll take all the help I can get!
