I recently did a gear swap on my '92 Flareside 4x4 351 E4OD. I went from 3.08 to 4.56. I want to correct the speedometer. I'm running 33" tires, so I figured a gear from a truck with 4.10's and stock tires should get it close. When I went to Ford they said they had nothing for a 4.10 or 3.73 for the E4OD trans. So I went home and crawled under the truck. I couldn't find a speedometer cable, so I figure it's electronic, but I couldn't find a pulse generator either. I didn't see anything that looked like it housed a changable gear like the older ones. Is there any way to correct the speedometer/odometer on my truck? HELP!
Rockcrawl,
From what I gathered from earlier posts , the speedo signal is sent from a toothed gear , next to the ring . Best I recall , it not only runs the anti lock brake functions , but also the speedometer .

Paul,
Thanks! I had thought of that while looking around under the truck, but I had never heard of anything like it, so I dismissed the thought. That must be it.
That means the axle gear change would not affect the speedometer reading, but the larger tire size would. I wonder if there are different gears available to compensate for the tire change. I didn't see the sensor when the gears were changed, but I had assumed it was not meshed gears, but a toothed ring and a hall-effect sensor that doesen't actually make contact. I'll investigate tommorow!
A gear change does not affect your speedometer but you tires will. I got some good info from this list to recalibrate my speedo back in Dec. it is very easy to do. It will probably take you about 5 Minutes to do. Just remember that your speedometer module can only be reprogrammed 6 times. Good Luck
Rockcrawl,
The best I recall , its was either 92 or 94 that Ford went to usung the electronic speedos . When I first read your post , I thought I read 94 instead of 92 . Like the previous post mentioned , In 4wd , the speedo gear is in the rear of the transfer case .
Paul
Thanks everyone for the info. Mine is electronic and it gets it's signal from the ABS sensor on the rear axle. Thanks JoeB for the email explaining how to calibrate it. This is great, if I go to bigger tires later, all I have to do is recalibrate it again. No gear to buy! I love my truck!
