First Rebuild

Looking for some advice, just picked up a 77 F150 Ranger XLT it has a seized 460 in it. What I'm looking for is the most simple not necessarily the most economical motor to swap it out with. it has a C6 transmission. I'm more about simplicity and dependability then flash and performance, opinions would be appreciated

A 300 I6 is your best bet. Unless you go with another 460 or a 429 you will need to get a new transmission

The 300 I6 is a good reliable motor. A 351M-400 should bolt up very easily. An inexpensive rebuild on a 400 would be a great choice. IMHO

i would think another 460 would be the simplest.

you could get a long block from nearly any year and just swap your existing oil pan, intake, valvecovers, and exhaust manifolds.

then you could try and rebuild the one that is locked up and sell it, or swap it back in if it is the original.

otherwise a 429 would be the next choice, but i would think those might not be as easy to find.

then, the 351m/400 would be the next choice. you'd have to make sure it is complete and has the right oilpan. then you'd likely have to adjust the exhaust and the trans linkage.

that's my thoughts .... free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it, though.

still trying to decide

a local guy offered me to swap his working 390 for my seized 460, is the 460 really worth more or is this guy nuts?

A 390 would be way to much work for you to swap in. No swap kits for a 390 into later trucks.

Why not just rebuild the 460?

Getting ready to pull a 400 and do a rebuild myself. Good luck on everything. This will be my first rebuild but I've found some great info on here.

Replacing it with the same kind of engine will be the most simple. With that being said why not rebuild the original engine? Just because it is seized does not mean its junk.Unless the the block is damaged it should be able to be repaired. Good luck.

Thats what I am saying. Why get rid of a 460? If it is just seized and the block is good, rebuild that engine.
