STI (self test input connector)

Hey, trying to trouble shoot a check engine light staying on. Truck is a 1992 explorer with 94,xxx miles on it that belongs to my senior father. Located the eeev? connector. The problem is over the years my nephew or buddy installed a stereo system. I believe they cut the end off the STI connector to use it turn on the amp. How many volts is the STI connector supposed to have. Very afraid to ground this wire into the EEv plug. I'm 99% sure I have the correct wire. But that 1% scares me. Sorry long winded. Thanks, Todd

There should be a diagnostic port hanging near the cabin fan or the power distribution box, under the hood..
