Ok guys I think I've ended up the expedition from hell. First the A/C now this. There is a whining noise from What I believe is the transmission. It only makes the noise is Reverse and drive. Neutral and park nothing. Very annoying and increases with throttle. Tranny seems to shift fine and flawless other than the whining. Also there is a "tick" sounds like an exhaust leak. Is this common or is it something else? The gf won't hardly drive it and is already wanting to sell it. Hoping I can get this figured out so we can keep it. Its an 05 Expedition limited 126k 5.4. just fyi thanks guys
The "tick" is most likely an exhaust leak due to broken manifold bolt(s) or a cracked manifold. The bolts are a PITA to replace as they often break when removing them. A cracked manifold can be welded or brazed but usually has to be removed to do the job properly. The bolts will have to be removed to do the job. Just be prepared.
The whine is very likely the front pump in the transmission which will require a trans removal to fix. This is usually caused by an improper assembly during a engine or trans install after a rebuild where the torque converter is not properly installed. The noise will not go away but, it often will last many miles without failure. It should be replaced for the sake of peace of mind.
