I've been experiencing some problems with my truck killing at random times, at 1'st I thought it was my camshaft sensor but there was a recall and it was changed about 6-8 months ago, it seemed at the time to fix problem but soon it came back so i'm wondering if there is a possibility of a fuel pump malfunctioning intermittedly because just the other day the truck killed and wouldn't start. It sounds like my fuel pump on the frame because i don't hear it when key is turned on but it does pump fuel in filter bowl slowly when key is on, so i'm wondering if this could be the problem all along? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
With the key on you should be able to hear the pump. Usually when they fail they just die, but you never know. Another possibility might be a restriction in the fuel pick up inside the tank.
Other issues can also make the fuel pump not come on with the key, so more information would be helpful. Does this happen all the time or just sometimes? When the pump is quiet, does the wait to start light come on and go off like normal, or does it stay on?
Thanks for the reply, at first it was few and far between then recently its been every time I used the truck. Sometimes it would kill while sitting at a red light, then it was happening when I would just leave my house then other times while i was driving in traffic and sometimes on the interstate. The wait to start light does come on and go off normally. I heard this was the site to come to for answers before I start buying parts I don't need. Any help is appreciated.
If you suspect a fuel pump failure, the first thing to do is verify the fuel pump has power when the truck is acting up. Just check the 2 posts on the fuel pump with a meter. If the power is good, try disconnecting the fuel line off the front of the pump, place a small hose on the front and drain it into a bucket. Turn the key on and watch to see what kind of fuel flow you're getting when the pump doesn't make the normal sound.
Then remove the fuel line off the back of the pump and stick a small hose on the back and the other end in a container of diesel. See if it pumps any better out of the container than it does out of the fuel tank. If you have voltage but you can't get a very healthy flow of fuel, it's time to change out the pump.
If there's no power to the pump it won't make a sound. When the pump is working properly, it makes the buzzing noise. If it's a fuel restriction, it usually buzzes louder. If voltage checks out, you may need a new pump.
Just remember, your issue has been intermittent, so you need to check it several times to make sure it's not an intermittent voltage issue. And if the truck is not running, the fuel pump only comes on for 25 seconds when the key is first turned on. Using a set of test leads and cycling the key will be easier than crawling under the truck repeated times.
just want to keep you posted on what i found out so far, does not appear to be a problem with fuel pump, I checked like you suggested and even dropped tank to check for trash or some kind of restriction but found nothing. I then changed my cps since it was only 28 bucks (figured it would be good to have a spare if this wasn't the problem) but no luck. Now on to the next stage to take my chip (DPTuner) out and see if this is the issue?? So as of now still depressed with no SuperDuty
