I got a steal on a 89 f150 with a 83 460 big block rebuilt c6 tranny 6 inch lift 34 inch mud brute tires but its 2x4 I was thinking of converting it To 4x4 but have no clue what I need or were to start hoping to do it as cheap as possible
Check out my build thread in my signature the link I am in the middle of one you can read what I got.
First off you will need transmission transfer case and front end. If I were you find a steal on a wrecked that didn't hurt the transmission nor transfer case or front end and use it for parts. Makes it alot easier. Just make sure it has 460 in it. Trust me cheap isn't going to be good when it would come to this. Like I said look at my build thread on my 89 F350

Doing a straight 2x4 to 4x4 conversion is pretty much a bolt-on deal, but seeing as you're building a 460-powered mud truck I'd skip the TTB and go for a D60. Best bet is to find an '85.5-97 4x4 F350 that came with a 460. That will give you the axles, trans, T-case, and at least the front drive line and maybe the back if the trucks are the same WB. Or at least a rear one you can have shortened.
D60 would be good for what you want to use it for, but a D44 out of a 78-79 F150 or Bronco would work too. (Probably easier and cheaper finding a D44).
A D44 could work, they can be upgraded to be nearly as strong as a D60. Depends on how large of a tire you want to run and how hard you plan to thrash it.
You only have a 8.8 rear axle(not to strong)
and have no front axle, no transfercase and only a 2wd trans.
Do yourself a favor and find something that doesn't need EVERYTHING changed
I've made this suggestion to others several times and somehow they always make one excuse or another for why they don't want to, but it's still sound advice. Since you're going to need an F350 donor truck anyway.
I pieced my 4x4 conversion together on my old '87 F150 with Pick n' Pull parts over the course of a year for maybe $600 (including rebuilding some parts). But, that was with a TTB D44 axle. And that didn't include swapping the output shaft in the rebuilt c6 my truck had. I was inexperienced at the time and only had that vehicle to drive, so I never pulled the trigger to finish it.
Honestly though, if that is a stock 83 460, and a stock slush box C6. . .a sterling 8.8 with stock gears should be fine. . . The TTB D44 front axle should fine as well. . .I wouldn't lock it, and don't go nuts on the tire size. 1 ton axles might be a little over rated for you at this point.
Yes it can be done, yes it can be done fairly cheaply. . .should it be done? That's up to you. Around here I can BUY an inspected and running 4x4 F150 for less than what I spent on parts to try and convert mine
If you just want to play in the mud and have some cheap fun, I would find a cheap 4x4 F150, swap the lift and tires over to it. . .and drop the 460 F150 down to stock with the spare parts and then sell it and make some or all of your money back
