Came home from work at about 2:30 in the afternoon yesterday, opened the back patio door and found my roommate's 16 year old mutt, dead. Heat stroke, I'd imagine.
Took the lifeless body to the Houston SPCA to be buried and just as I was about to leave, three very early teenage girls come in with a young Black Labrador Retriever, sniffing and crying, all teary eyed. I asked the employees what the dog's chances of first passing the temperament test were to which they said 50/50. Very sweet young dog, all wiggles. But if she didn't pass their test she'd be put down immediately.
Then I asked about the health tests and if she didn't pass would they at least inform the people who dropped her off. The girls said they have never taken the dog to the vet, she's had no shots and has not been fixed. And the answer to my question? Nope, euthanized on the spot.
If all tests were passed how long would they allow a dog to be on the adoption floor? Three days and guess what they then do to the dog? Yup.
FTE, meet my new girl, Sadie, who now with certainty will live a long and happy, full life.
It is meant to be!
I currently have 4 rescues living with me.
We have had 12 rescues over the last 16 years.
Sadie needs a companion that I'm sure you can find where you found her.
SPCA, PETA, and all the other animal "rescue" organizations should have their directors euthanized.
they "rescue" an animal, than to kill it.
what people don't realize is that these Hippocrates kill 95% of the animals they take in for adoption.
kudos to you for saving her..
REPS sent to you for saving that gal...she's a beauty!!! Good luck to her.
Tom...if we had better spay neuter programs in place...and...if people would use them...we wouldn't need to put down so many animals every year.
My dog...affectionately known as Cujo...was rescued 10 1/2 years ago...literally on her way to get the needle. She's now 12...has trouble walking...seeing...hearing...but her "Happy Tail" still works very well!!!
My black lab rescue is the best dog I ve ever had. Her play pal our owned since a puppy, yellow lab had to be put down last year from old age so we have been looking for a new play pal. In fact I would go to extraordinary lengths to help or save my black lab.
Our other rescue is our Malamute but he is a loner and likes to keep to himself. Very proud to have given the malamute a very happy life for the last 4 years and he will die a happy pooch compared to the hard life he had to begin with.
Pumpkin, laying down on the left, is my only other dog. Had her since she was a stray at no more than six weeks old. That was 8 years ago. Dagger is the Yellow lab, belongs to a friend as does the Pomeranian.
Rescue dogs are the best. I have four mutts, they were all on their way to a bad ending. The first one my wife got years back, an aussie/rott cross, his owner was dumping him at a rest stop at about 8wks. He's 12 now, and a great dog. She had to leave him in CA with her dad, and when we went to pick him up he acted so old. Now he's just happy and jumping around, very active but still shows signs of age.
We also got a complete mutt as a young puppy who was being picked on by all his siblings, a young Akita who would have been put down due to food aggression (taken care of inside a month), and what was supposed to be another Akita that turned out to be a Great Pyrenees who was only four weeks old when we got him. He has some issues like somewhat frequent seizures, but is a great dog with the kids.
Awesome, sweet, cute, lovable, affectionate bundle of highly intelligent puppy this one is!
Within the last three days Sadie has learned to sit on command, shake and now the best part, only today learned to go to her kennel. I was trippin' out, thought it was a fluke, tried it repeatedly and each time she obeyed. From the hallway I told her, "Kennel!" and she trotted off to my room, got in there and waited for me. I tried it again from downstairs and the same thing. I just couldn't believe it, I only tried teaching her that today and she got it within a few hours, in between taking a long afternoon nap on the bed with me.
Joyous braggin' over.
Oh yes, she is already house broken/potty trained which is a big plus!
