Truck broke down - Help

Hey all,

My truck broke down on the freeway last night. I heard a cracking noise (metal breaking) and it sounded like a backfire. The engine was running fine, good RPM's. I rev it up and the noise got worse, It sounds like a bad lawn mower or go cart. I was also smelling raw fuel.

Could I have broken a exhaust flange or the manifold? It sounds like the exhaust is bad and not burning the fuel.

There were no codes or a check engine light. I only went 1/2 mile after it broke down. I had to tow it to a local shop.

It's a 2003 4.6 with 205,000 miles.

Any help would be great.

Thank you,
Mark

Anyone? What are the signs of a bad manifold?

When you've got "a bad manifold" there are usually external "signs". Mostly obvious visible cracks in manifold, or exhaust manifold gasket issues where hot exhaust blows out between manifold & head.

IMO hearing "a cracking noise (metal breaking) and... smelling raw fuel" doesn't sound like "a bad manifold" but "sounds like a bad lawn mower or go cart" really isn't much to go on.

I applogize, it was at 9:00 last night...lol I couldn't really look at it closely.

I don't want the shop to rip me off.

I was pressing on the throttle and it sounded like the exhaust was escaping. A thumping noise and fuel smell. I will find out soon, I hope.

The engine seemed like it was running fine at idle.

Oddly enough "a bad manifold" can be easier to ID at night.

In the dark you can often see the hot gases escaping "a bad manifold".

That's not bad (if he is putting an insert in the head to lengthen the threads) considering a cheap one is about $30 and the new coil is $55.
