Good to see a body shop standing behind their work. Sounds like it will be better than new when they do the repair. Just for the record, I am a Ford guy through and through. The bed supports ARE a problem. Always have been. I don't have the coin myself to get a new one, or a take off for that matter. Thats why I have $250 worth of lumber and hardware on the back of mine right now. You should refer as many as you can to that shop. You don't see that kind of responsibilty taken for previous work.
first i ain't whining about the bed side needing to be replaced, second my other post about how f$cking cheap Ford designed the bed supports is true. And second my bed side is not rotted out, the body shop that fixed it when some guy backed into my truck when it was 18 days old had welds pop off so it needed to be repaired by them for free. When they went to repair the broken welds they called and told me that the repair they did was rotting inside the panel, the owner told me that the painter didn't prep the panel correctly and that they are taking full responsibility for THEIR mistake. My post was nothing more then as soon as you get to fix one thing another thing happens! You all need to calm the hell down because i wasn't saying anything about Ford nor their engineers in THIS post. And I'm young? I didn't realize that a 19 year old kid had the money to buy his own brand new 2004 F350 and pay it off in three years, and yes now at 28 I'm gonna bitch about the cheap bed supports that rot out when there are hundreds of other trucks, GM and dodges i see every day that don't get washed or anything and they are spotless underneath
Simply amazing.
You post two negative threads within a week in the same forum. The first bashing those who design the trucks that many of us our passionate about, as well as the trucks themselves. The second thread(this one) is also negative.
And you have a problem with those who disagree with you?
your right everone has their own opinion, i might have jumped to fast.....
but the bed supports and other pieces on these trucks are a known problem and no one at Ford seems to care
and who the hell are are you? Ive been on this site since 2008 helping guys with problems, never once did i ever read through a post and see you ever on here posting about how to help someone, what are you one of them leaches that lurks on post's until you think of something smart to say about someone!
YEP, I'm definitely reading your past posts from now on all of them, because the ones I've read so far are very "helpful", I'm back to May 2012, maybe I should start at 2008 to see if you were more helpful at that time.
So what type of metal are your using to replace the junk bed supports with anyway, I hope it's something better than those stupid Ford engineers came up with in 2004.
Wow, an 8 year warranty on a patch? Definately a good find there. Just so your clear this will only be a patch as well, a better patch but a patch non the less. I hope it works out well for you in the end. This patch should outlast the rest of the stock metal at its age. If it were my truck the original patch would have never happened.
everything was OEM finish still, the u-bolt plate was the only thing that was rusting bad. Leaf springs and the frame cross supports only had some slight surface rust that needed wire brushing but the axle and frame still had their original coatings
All I know, living in the northeast, is no car/truck lasts unless you don't drive it in the winter and are completely ridiculous about fixing every chip/scratch/etc.... To me it just sounds like you're upset that you worked hard to pay off this truck and are now needing to repair expensive parts. If you're sick of repairing things buy new and sell after warranty. Your truck is 8 years old. Things are gonna give. I'm NOT bashing you. My dad has an 86 for econoline 150 that still runs. Needs constant small repairs? You bet. Rust? My lord. He fixes it but it's not pretty. He loves that van. If I had to form my own opinion it's this. You've poured your money, heart, and soul into this truck. It's taking more than giving to you, maybe you can't get another truck (can't afford, don't want to spend again, etc...) and are upset you're "stuck" with this truck. Again NOT bashing you.
tnk everything you said is true, i wanted this truck bad at 19 and worked two jobs to pay this freaker off. Yes i used it for work towing our 30HP backhoe about twenty times. Yes i made some extra money with a few small side jobs since my dad didnt care i used the backhoe. I moved into my house using this truck, its hauled pavers, stone, mulch for my house but your right. After all the tender loving care, wahig iin thwinter months tokeep the salt off of her the oldish girl is biting me back. She runs like a new truck, she looks like a new truck but she aint new....
i know wade i might be over the top with what i call "rust", LOL. Just frustrating to see all this overkill work and yet the dam bed supports look like swiss cheese. Hopefully my bed will be finished today or tomorrow so i ca weld in the new bed supports, get it all rust painted ad covered in bed liner coating and get her all bolted up by Saturday, i hope......

Thats why I have a flatbed on mine for this winter. We've talked about those darn cross braces before. Mine just gave up the ghost in two winters. Just the way it is around here. I'll be on the hunt for a takeoff bed in the next few months. Need to log a little OT so I can come up with the coin. lookin forward to the "after pics".
You just gotta remember vehicles that we use are liabilities, not assets. When I was that age I wanted a SD too. Couldn't and did not want to work two jobs for a vehicle while in college. I drove a 96 F150 which I racked on 84,000 miles to a total of 114,000mi. Should've kept that one a lot longer. After 2 more trucks I now have a nice used rig and a beater car to absorb the salt and eat the miles so hopefully I can keep this truck longer.
But the moral of the story is vehicles are liabilities and nothing more. Yes business owners use them to help their business but for general folk it's just taking their hard earned money. Super Duties are expensive machines to purchase and maintain. I think it would be safe to say a lot of personal SD owners truly cannot afford them (if you used financial planner advice and numbers) and when they wear out the hard earned money they used to purchase it leaves a worse taste in their mouth than the guy/gal who can easily afford a new king ranch every couple of years.
Also all those that take extensive measures to prevent rust, especially in the rust belt ...I really think its just a losing battle in time and money invested. The water salt combo is going to get in cracks and areas sealents ad peventative things cant reach. I spray fluid film every year but now won't be driving in it. Good luck with your truck and try not to let the small matters in life get the best of you. It's really just a hunk of metal, not an extension of you.
finally got my bed back last friday and im 50/50 on the new bed side. The work is amazing buthe finally paint is so so. It has a cloud right in the middle of the panel that the painter said "just needs to be buffed again no problem" but well see what happens tomorrow
