Starter Problem - slowly going south

Hi,

I have a 74 F-250 that now has 300 6 (used to be V8). Not sure the exact age of engine but same era.

When starting, the starter turns but does not always engage the engine, just spins. At first this problem only happened intermittently but now seems to be getting worse and worse to the point sometimes can't start it.

The truck has a new battery and a new solenoid.

I am assuming this is the starter itself slowly going away ... but not sure, what do you guys think?

I am also assuming that if a get a new(rebuilt) starter it should be for the 300 engine, correct?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Sounds like a dying starter to me. When you buy the new starter, you'll want to order it based off the drivetrain as you suspect.
