Depends on the pump. A good Chevy pump should put out around 1200 psi. The old big steel Ford pumps might get to 800 psi.
I'm driving an old rod build (by someone else)...a '50 Ford F1 with a 302 Ford in it. It's a cobbled up V-belt system and I would like to just find me a salvage yard-- complete Ford V-belt system and install that so that everything works together and most importantly...lines up.
The problem with that is, there's a GM Saginaw pump on there. BUT, it in fact makes the steering slightly "twitchy" and I am certain that it could actually make my steering have MORE feel and thus be more stable on the road if...it operated on LESS pressure.
So...since Ford pumps are known to have less pressure (from 1,200/GM to 800/Ford)....what would be wrong, in your opinion, with canning the GM pump and going with the Ford pump....and solve two problems at once?
