i have a 1977 ford 4x4 I am trying to put a 1978 351w motor in the truck the truck had a 300 6 4 speed trans. but the other owner took the motor and the bellhousing have trouble finding right bellhousing, clutch fork won't fit in bellhousing right. I bought a new flywheel and complete clutch ***.I have a bellhousing that bolts up to motor but when I try to put clutch fork in place there is not enough room in the side of bellhousing opening can anybody offer any help.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say the clutch fork won't go in. Is the hole in the side too small or is there insuficient room in the housing for it? What is the casting # on the housing? Another thing you need to check is the length of the input shaft to see if it fits in the pilot bushing in the crank. The best way is to install the bell housing without the clutch & pressure plate assembly. Then stab the transmissionin in place and bolt it to the housing. After this is done, get a light and shine it into the clutch fork hole and look to see that the input shaft is going up into the pilot bushing. If it's not then you have the wrong bellhousing. As far as I know there are two different length housings. One is 6.5 inches (front to back) and the other is 7.5 to 8 inches ( front to back) You may have an earlier housing thats 6.5 inches and need a 7.5 to 8 inch ( I'm not sure of the exact dimension but it's somewherer between there) You DO have a pilot bushing in the back of the crank, don't you?
Yes I have a pilot bearing in the crankshaft.what i'm talking about is when I put the clutch fork in the bellhousing and on the pivot ball or what every you call it.It does not line up even with the clutch fingers ,so I do not think it will work wright, buy the way this is with out the trans.hookup.i believe that I have the wrong bellhousing but the guy at the junk yard swears the bellhousing is wright for a 351 w motor. I will check the leight of the bellhousing tomorrow. thank you for your sugg.
