38r???

I have read over and over and over about how loud the whistle is with the 38r and an open intake. I have a stage 2 AFE. I was wondering if someone could quantify this for me. How loud or annoying is it? My WW is loud enough for me. How much worse is it? I would like to lower my egts so I am looking at an exhaust housing, but if I do that with the high flow outlet and ceramic coating I am looking at $600. That just seems like a lot to put into a stock turbo. But I dont want to listen to the whistle all the time either.
Any suggestions? I have heard the H2e is good but that thing is really expensive and that is without the new uppies and everything.

Well, to give you an example, the 38R and open element filter @ 5psi sounds like 15psi on the stock filter box. When you stand in it, she really sings! I'm gonna build the .pdf sheet metal enclosure, as others have said it will tone it down. Some use the AIS filter kit with good luck, but its more expensive them I would like to spend.

I have a 38R with the AIS intake. Not bad at all. Can't testify as to an open intake.

I have never had a stock intake. Only a wicked wheel with my AFE intake. It has a box around it. I would be ok with hearing it at 15 psi but dont want it to be loud at 5-10 psi.

The 38r is like that at 5 psi? Why is it so loud compared to a different turbo?

Maybe some others with a 38r will chime in. I have heard complaints that it is loud.

Mine was louder than I wanted at first, but I did a few things that made it acceptable. My wife never said a word about it all the way from jersey to RRE and back. I've have foil addition in my sig, as kind of a joke, waiting for someone to ask what that is. So far no body has, but its not the intercooler pipe.

I actually noticed that yesterday. Where is it and is that all you did?

The foil I added is dynamat. I added it to the fire wall just below the two screws that stick out of the oem foil on the fire wall behind the turbo and all the way up to the hood drip rail. No it doesn't melt or come loose, its there to stay. Next I cut 1.5" strips and carefully wraped the intake tube, both the garrett and the banks cai. Next came the inside of the filter box. If you are interested I could take pics of it and put them up in the next few days. I wiped off the black lettering with acetone or denatured alcohol and it has a factory look to it. Thats the part you can see. Since the cai pulls from the fender as well as the front, I also placed a sound deadener behind the inlet in the fender, so noise doesn't travel toward the driver door and dash. It consists of fiberglass sealed in a contractor weight trash bag that was cut about 8x12. Inside the cab I used 2" foam rubber that I cut and stuffed everywhere I could, from up under the dash towards the windshield to the lower kicks. To access this I just dropped the glove box and pulled the dash face part of the way back. This was the least time consuming part. Now keep in mind the whole floor and kicks were done with dynamat and carpet backing some years ago so this might have helped also, but not that much for the turbo thats out front. I still have the doors to do this winter with new speakers. So is it louder than I would like? A little. But really, cruising you barely hear it. The faster the quieter. It has more of a growl than a wine like the WW. You mostly hear it going through the gears and at low speeds. A lot of work? Not really. You don't have to do it start to finish like mechanical work. In hind site, since someday I'll need up pipes, that gqssb might have been a better choice, But I don't know how good they really are or if their quiet. I trust the garrett, I know its made here and it fell into place. Thats a big deal to me as I'm not a mechanic. One other thing. It runs great. No more stall, surge, and has lower temps. It jumps to 30+ psi and cruises at slightly less psi than stock. I have one more idea which I know will quiet it even more, but I'll wait till thats done to talk about that.

I have a 38R and I had a 6637 for at least 6 months and it's not too bad, but if you like a quiet truck then use the AIS intake. I have the AIS now and it is much quieter. I do miss the louder whistle of the 6637 38R combo sometimes, but I do like the quiet of the AIS on long trips.

Really?!? 600$?!?!?

I guess I must've been one of the lucky ones then, because I did exactly what you're talking about doing minus the coating, for well under $600. I got it all from Clay too...

I spent a little over $250 with shipping and modded my stock turbo. When I got my Stage I's, people swore up and down I wouldn't like them with the stock turbo and needed a 38R, but with blank pedestal and no EBPV that turbo can spool and REALLY get you down the road. It's actually scared me a few times....

Stock turbo and stage 1's is a good combo IMHO.
