I guess I must've been one of the lucky ones then, because I did exactly what you're talking about doing minus the coating, for well under $600. I got it all from Clay too...
I spent a little over $250 with shipping and modded my stock turbo. When I got my Stage I's, people swore up and down I wouldn't like them with the stock turbo and needed a 38R, but with blank pedestal and no EBPV that turbo can spool and REALLY get you down the road. It's actually scared me a few times....
That's just what I could figure out from clays website. I added the exhaust housing, high flow outlet, and ceramic coating. The coating on the housing adds 140 and the
wastegate housing is 330I by itself
Ah, I got ahead of myself, I didn't do the exhaust housing, I just did the Garrett HFO and Blank Pedestal, now I barely see any smoke and the turbo doesn't take long to spool at all.
Before, I could mash it from a dead standstill and the truck would think for a second or two and sometimes three, THEN spool and go. Now with the high flow outlet and blank pedestal, as soon as I mash it, it GOES with some SERIOUS fury....
It this is how the stock turbo acts with a few simple mods, I'd hate to see how sideways a 38r would be with the same mods....

So you are saying just the high flow outlet is all one would need. You think the hfo and housing would be that much better?

It's up to you, but that's what I would do...
The whole point of me getting it was to permanently prevent the EBPV rod leak from ever occurring again. The better performance of the turbo was an unexpected benefit. Well.....I wouldn't say unexpected, but WAY better than I expected.
Even with the SCT and DP-Tuner chip I had before, from a dead stop the truck would sometimes think about it for a second or two, would belch out a cloud of black smoke then take off. Now when I mash it from a dead stop, the turbo spools quickly, doesn't leave too much smoke, and the truck runs like a raped ape. It's surprised alot of people...
For me this just holds me off till the day I need to replace the turbo or someone makes me a screaming deal on a 38R.
Would a larger exhaust housing or compressor housing g doing anything g to make it quieter
An exhaust housing won't change the tone. It's the compressor, and those housings aren't interchange to my knowledge. Without knowing the specs, my guess is the pitch of the blades is more aggressive. Couple that with a wheel 8mm's bigger moving more air = more intense tone(whistle).

The exhaust side is the same...
I have run a .84 housing on the 38R, a 1.00 housing and a 1.15 housing. The tone of the turbo doesnt change, just the boost, back pressure and EGT's.
Thanks obviously I dont know much about turbos and was just curious. Dont think I will be doing a turbo. Dont want to drop that much money. I sounds like a new outlet and maybe an exhaust housing on the stock turbo would make me happy.
