I am planning on putting an intake unit on my truck shortly following my exhaust, anyone have any suggestions on which unit i should get, and why?

I'd leave the stock filter assembly intact and open a hole in the front plastic like Tim did. The stock filter flows as well as needed, but really keeps the intake clean.

In order of filtration and flow ability.
1) Stock or AFE ProGuard 7
2) AFE ProGuard7 or Stock
3) No Filter
4) K&N

My Vote

I have an afe intake I purchased off of ebay got a good deal on it. With the exhaust done you will notice the turbo spools up quicker

I've had K & N's on several GAS trucks and cars, and they were okay, but I know they are less restrictive and without meaning to start another fight, I just don't want to take a chance with my PSD, that I plan on keeping until the fenders fall off. With the gassers, I never expect to keep them much past 75,000 or 100,000 miles, so the intake of a little dirt didn't worry me too much.

It's not worth the money to upgrade, your not gaining a hole lot with a filter change

Hmm, I'm not sure I would do that. I was just looking at, and it seems to me that piece in front of the large opening of the intake is there to block water and what ever else may get rammed in there, like bugs and such. Also, you do not want to be ramming air into an intake system with a MAS. It really can mess up the signals sent by the MAS at certain times. For instance. The intakes on a 300 ZX is right behind the front fascia which is very open for air flow to the radiator and oil cooler. In stock form the filters are enclosed in a box with air inlets on the sides of the box. But the aftermarket intake removes the box, and replaces the stock flat filters with cones. Now these cone are directly in the path of the oncoming air. The problem arises when you push in the clutch and let off the gas at higher speeds, 45 and above. The rush of air seems to confuse the MAS and the motor just stalls out. Happens every time. The fix is simple, a plastic panel placed in front of the air filters to block the ram air effect. That is exactly what I see set up with our intakes on this truck.

I wouldnt worry about the water, unless driving in water as high as the intake. there are companys that sell water injection kits for these truck that lower EGT's and add 50 to 90 HP they flow something like 7 gallons an hour, if I remember right. If you dont believe me just go to dieselperformancespecilistinc.com and talk to Ken Ingelsman. It's suppost to be safer than propane. Bugs might be a problem, but you can always put some screen material in front of the intake. I think the biggest problem could be ice and snow.

he just left out the "s" on the end... www.dieselperformancespecialistsinc.com
thanks for the link, strokin, i think the water injection is a good idea. 300 degree drop in EGT would allow for significantly more fueling.

I put a Mac on mine it sounds like a Big Rig turbo Gives 26more rear wheel horse gained almost 2mpg and it looks good, easy install. I recently seen a sleeve like a sock that dirt track racers use on open element air filters that doubles filtration and is easy to clean you just wipe it off no need to clean filter charger at least not for a long time.
