Question Idle control?

A friend of mine just bought a '02 F-350 oil burner(diesel). It has a box mounted on the trans hump that seems to be a manually operated rev limiter. He said he could set a number in it i.e. 2800, and the engine wouldn't rev higher than that no matter what gear he was in, it would shift up or down as needed to maintain this RPM.My question is; is this the Idle control option, and what is the real function of this option, and for the average person what do you use it for?

Thanks,

Idle control?

I'm gonna say that is for the pto !

Does this truck have a power take off option on the tranmission ?

also if this truck has a generator for producing 110volts as remote supply it was used to keep the idle up for a constant voltage!

Just my guess !

Idle control?

Fortyfords has it right. It is to keep rpm up to operate auxillary pto equipment and high electrical draw equipment such as a winch. It is also good to have for extended idling. Low idle creates wet stacking over time. You can use the idle controller to maintain EGT of 275*F or higher with higher idle speeds.
