My trans stopped locking the TC until it shifts into 4th. Driving around light its no big deal but under a heavy load where I take 3rd up to 55 mph or so I'll flip my TC lock switch at about 40 mph and manually lock it. Then after I'm in overdrive I'll unlock the switch. I don't know if that's even necessary but it seems to me that the fluid will heat up to much if I didn't lock it by hand?? If my trans will make it back to AZ I'm only 200 miles from John Woods, might be time for a 'real' trans!
ZF 5?............LOL!! Just kiddin! I've always been a manual trans guy. I loved the auto trans in the '03 SD I had. But, with our trucks, I'll keep my ZF........that is until my knees get so bad I can't push the clutch anymore LOL!!
I knew I would hear that one Bill. LOL My knees are still OK but I just can't see myself shifting with a load on. I do have to admit, I'm tired of rebuilding the auto! When I find some time I'll have to read your thread on the CC.
Not much help Glenn, but I did get to talk to my trans guy today. He's done a bunch of these e4od's behind psd's. He does them 2 ways. First for more of a stock truck, but still not just a stock rebuild. Second way is for a truck with mods, built heavier. I trust his work and am going this way. If I bring him the trans BEFORE it goes out, he told me no more than 1800 bucks including a billet convertor out the door with warranty. I just can't justify 5k+ for a racer x, john wood, etc. trans when I know the kind of work this guy does for that much less.
Wow, I was a lot of help for you. haha. I just thought I'd fill you in on this since i was bugging you before about what I was going to do. I was going to pm you again, but figured what the heck, I may as well jump in on your trans thread!

This deal for anyone Darin or just you? 1800 sounds great for a built trans. Shipping might kill me though
You should really let the TC unlock when it shifts from 3rd to 4th, its a pain when your doing it manually. I have the LED's on mine and thats what it does between every gear. I used to lock mine in 3rd and leave it until one day we turned a corner, put my foot in it and we went nowhere.....

I was just giving you a hard time LOL! Not much to read on the cc yet, just some pics, and excuses why I'm not getting anything done to it LOL!!!

I'm sure you're right Todd, shipping both ways would probably suck. I was quoted 500 bucks from racer x for both ways shipping, as in getting a new one and sending in my core. That 1800 I think is for anyone. He may be cutting me a little bit of a deal, but I know him real good and he's not going to rip anyone off. Not that kind of guy. I would guess that price is pretty firm.
Todd, if you really are interested, whether now or in the future, pm me and I would call him for you and check it out. You may want to check on the shipping though first, as that could be a killer. Racer may get a deal with someone with a higher quantity of stuff shipping out. I don't know how that works. Or you could always bring it here, I bet he'd set up a day to do it for you. Road trip!
You can ship FEDEX ground for around 300 give are take a little
Darin that's what I'm doing. The kit I'm getting is 1500 and our trans guy is charging 500 to build if I bring him the trans or add another 400 for him to R&R

I love road trips! Although I can't stand driving through Iowa. Pretty sure someone threw something off a bridge at my grand Cherokee when we were headed to Wyoming in Iowa once. Put a softball size hole in the windshield. We were lucky it was the middle of the night and didn't see it coming or we could have wrecked badly. First thing I thought off was a horror film and someone trying to disable the vehicle. Unlike the movies, we kept moving and I put my .45 next to me!
I'm going to have to figure something out about my trans. Chip will be here this week and I've been talking to Jim because I'm pretty sure a few injectors are heading south. So stage 1.5's will be coming in the future. Then the poor trans is really not going to like me!
This is what's going in mine http://www.transmissioncenter.net/e4od.htm

When I mentioned Darin that I had a flare, as I called it, I finally figured out what it is. When it would shift to 4th, sometimes it would be a very quick TC lock and then shift. Sometimes it would lock, then unlock then lock as it shifted into 4th. Sometimes you wouldn't hear or feel anything, just a normal shift into 4th. But, when this happens I use the TC lock switch I have and lock it and unlock it while its in 3rd to prove that the TC isn't locked until the 4th gear shift. This all happens very fast, less then a second. Otherwise the trans is still working fine. I don't know if this would be considered a sign that its giving up the ghost or not?
That price sounds good Darin, I'm going back to the Black Hills in Sep. If I have trouble, how busy is he? LOL I hear you allllll the way about the cost. This winter I would like to put the s366 turbo in and send my injectors to Jim. Does it ever end?
HAHA, they should have a five minute rule between posts. Irate kit, I'll look for that article in the FUTURE magazine. Just playing, JK. If I could get ahold of tomorrow's Wall Street journal I'd be a millionaire! Thanks, I'll look for 2011.
