So i am swaping my 86c6 out for a 5 speed out of a 94 f150. Im stumped as how to get my speedo to werk. On the 86 its mechanical off the tranny. On the 94 its electric off the rearend. Any help would b greatly appreciated thanks
Only way I know of is swap the tail housing and output shaft to an earlier model with the speedometer drive. I've heard of being able to modify the later ones to accept the cable and gear but not sure how that would be done.

That's my understanding as well. Apparently the newer tail shaft housings, or at least some of them, have a boss cast in for the speedo cable. You can drill the boss to accept the cable and gear, and drill and tap it to take the hold-down bolt. But, you also have to determine if the tail shaft itself has the driving gear for the speedo. And, you have to drill the hole in exactly the right place to get the proper engagement of the gears.
I would think it would be easier to swap tail shafts, assuming yours doesn't have the gear, and the housing.
So the tail shaft off of my c6 should werk or am.i misunderstanding you guys. Im just really confused. Or are u guys talking off the transfer case
Wait! You didn't say anything about a transfer case. If you have a 4wd it is entirely a different ball game because the speedo comes off the t-case for those. So, if you are keeping the t-case then the speedo isn't a problem. However, your new transmission will obviously need to be a 4wd version with the adaptor and not a tail shaft housing.
O. Ok. Sorry about that. So my transfer from the auto will werk on the 5 speed and have no issues in the first place is wat im.understanding correct??
It is my understanding that all the t-cases that Ford used will bolt onto any of their transmissions - assuming the transmission is a 4wd version. There is a big difference in the 2wd and 4wd transmissions, with the latter having an extension housing instead of a tail shaft housing, and a different output shaft.
IOW, you can replace the tranny and still use the same t-case and speedo cable. But, a different tranny may have a different length so may take a longer or shorted drive shaft.
C instead of see. B instead of be. i instead of I. I don't usually respond to people who use textese or whose posts I can understand easily as there are plenty of people who are needing help and I spend less time helping people who's posts I can understand. Don't know why I replied to yours.
So just to clarify a few more things, im running a 351w that currently has the c6. I should be able to swap fly wheels and trannys and use my 86 transfer and be in business right??
