I am wantin do do something a little different in my truck. Rather than just go out and buy an aftermarket nav unit, I'd like to put a computer in place of the head unit. I think I've pretty much got everything figured out but the last piece of my puzzle. I am wanting to have the ability to use a program that will display parameters from the OBD2 port on the truck without the Ford Enhanced Diagnostics but can't seem to find out if I'll be able to see the things I want to see.
I'd like to get the following;
EGT
RPM
MAF
Those are my top few and the only show stoppers of the project if I can't get them. It's important that they are standard because the program I want to buy needs to integrate into the program that handles all of the media and navigation programs. Any ideas?
There is software that runs on an iPhone or super phone that uses the codes from the obd2. You will have to do some searching but I Am not sure it's compatible with pc type processing.
Correct. The program is called Dashcommand and it does have a PC version. It is only capable of reading standard PIDs. I just need to know if EGT temp is a standard PID or if it is going to require the ford enhanced diagnostics.
If ford enhanced diagnostics are required, Dashcommand will not ever be able to pick it up.
Looks good. I'll download when my OBD2 to USB adapter gets here and report back.
A lot of people probably think I'm crazy to go through all of the pain of doing this when there are very nice nav units out there. I just like to be different and like the idea of being able to customize everything about my truck stereo.
Initially will have a small atom based PC for the testing to make sure I can make it do everything sync does. Will upgrade to an I3 system if successful.
I'll be running centrafuse as a front end and either surgical or garmin mobile pc for navigation. I'm going to completely remove the factory head unit and replace it with an 8" touch screen. I may even relocate the HVAC controls and add a second screen if everything goes well. I'll start another thread when parts start coming in if you guys would like to see the results.
Dash Daq just doesn't seem to be reasonable for my application. They have designed the software to work only with the OBD2 cables they sell for $495. Add the software price of $100 and you've got a very nice but expensive diagnostic tool that will not embed into the GUI that I will be using.
The solution?
I'm going to purchase dashccommand for PC and add a module for te EGT temps. This setup will cost me $140 and I'll have a nicer graphical interface. Thanks for the help so far. Look for a project to start in the fall when it cools off a little.
