96 E-150 belt problems
I have a 1996 E-150 with a 4.9 I6, and an auto tranny with no air. My problem is that the serpentine belt is riding about 1/8-1/4 inch up on the back side of the pulley of the power steering unit. The tensioner is fine, and all the other components on the belt are fine as well. I have recently replaced the power steering pump twice, so that is not the problem.
My question is --- Is there a way to shim these pumps so they will be in proper alignment with the belt? This thing eats belts, and I will soon get unlucky and have a shredded belt take out other parts. I love this truck as it has a good engine and tranny, the body is good, and it gets good mileage. I also need it in my work.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can align the power steering unit with the belt? Do you shim it? Is there any other way to adjust it, or Am I sunk? I hate to scrap out the van as it is in great shape except for the belt eating problem. Any suggestions or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Al
Is the pulley on power steering pump press fit, like others on FORD?
Rubber ring in harmonic balancers have bad habit of allowing pulley to slip out of line on its core, especially if contaminated by oil. Problem can be hard to see, but small misalignment can throw belt on next pulley.
Those press fit power steering pulleys need to be very accurately positioned. Rebuilt pumps may have different length shafts. The only EZ way to do it is w/special tool & precision.
