Anyone have any suggestions on what would make the power steering belt break two times in a less then a week? Is it possible that i just got a bad belt or could it be that there is a problem with my pump?
Was it squealing or giving any kind of warning at all? If it was, you might have a bad bearing in the pump. If not, check to see if your pulleys are lined up correctly. If they're off by even an inch or less, they will wear out the sides of the belt and chew it up.
I would check to be sure your pump is not binding, and your A/C is not locked up, if you have it, also check to make sure the belts are straight, check for cracked pulleys or nicks on side of pulleys. If that all checks out then buy the better belts, Like Napa. I had this samething happen to me a few years back with Auto Zone belts, which were (Kelly-Springfield) after checking everything I installed Napa belts and have not had anymore problem. Keep it under 10,000 RPM
And also, make sure the belt fits the pulley groove fully. If it doesn't, it could slip, heat up, and chew itself to death. You don't want the belt to be outside of the pulley anymore than an 1/8th inch or less.
Ii went out and turned the pump by hand and it has a little more resisitance going clockwise than if you turn it counter clockwise. Pulleys look to be in good order and pump was at proper level but has been leaking recently. I hate to mention but both belts were from the zone. Should the pump spin with the same amount of resistance both ways? The belts fit in the groves perfectly which is what makes me mad both broke when going in reverse and turning right.
If the pump is leaking, replace it. It's creating a pressure loss, as well as loss of coolant, and will eventually get worse. As for the belts, get better ones...cheap belts break.
I agree with RR4E spent the extra couple of bucks and get better belts even a spare.
I was out in the middle of BFE colder than well you know the rest of the story and had a belt break come off and break another.
It was a long walk even made for a longer day until I got the truck back on the road.
Which reservoir did you punch a hole in? If you're talking the top tank on the rad, that's a problem. If you're talking the over-flow, not as much of a problem, and can probably be fixed with some two part epoxy material. The over-flow is not under pressure, so epoxy will work just fine.
