It's done this since I've owned it and I never thought much about it but i'd like to know if this might be a common thing or if there is something I can do to fix it. I do know that the previous owner put new points, rotor, and a distributor cap in it.
When I put my truck in gear and push on the throttle, there is a very slight hesitation that lasts only a second or so. When I sit at idle after startup it seems to be fine, I can rev it all day long with no hesitation. I ran a can of Seafoam through the front tank and it didn't fix it. Any ideas of what it might be? 97 F250HD with the 460.
There are no points in a 1997 Ford anything including your F250. I see no mention of replacing spark plugs, wires or fuel/air filters. Start with the basics then work your way out from there.
You should also check for codes. Many times there can be a problem or code stored in Continuous Memory (CM) without turning on the MIL light.
If it has good power while driving besides the hesitation, I would suspect a faulty TPS or MAP sensor causing the hesitation.
First pull the codes, then I'd grab a multimeter and check the TPS voltage with the key on, engine off. The voltage should rise smoothly and steadily as you open the throttle, and be between 0.5 and 1.1 volts at the idle position.
Does it hesitate with the engine hot, cold, or both?
It does it when it's hot or cold and only when I initially hit the throttle. The throttle is a bit stiff when I push it down too, don't know if that has anything to do with it but I thought i'd mention it.
As far as the dist cap and such, I didn't know it didn't have points but I do know the previous owner changed the cap and the plug wires look new also. I'll check the plugs while i'm at it.
How do I check codes, this truck does not have OBD II on it but I do know that it has a connector under the hood, can't remember what it is called though.
OK, I did the self test and it came back with a system pass code of 1 1 1. I Guess i'll start checking the simple stuff first and see what I can dig up.
I thought I would post up what I found on this hesitation problem. I finally got around to getting a timing light so I disconnected the SPOUT connector and checked the timing, it was down near 7* so I adjusted it to about 11* and the hesitation disappeared and it seems to get up and go a bit better. Hoping it might help just a tad with mpg but if it doesn't that's ok.
