I have alot of work ahead of me. I need to do the same thing, but both sides, bed and front panel. lot of work. I tried to find a shorty, but there aint none around, and the few I did find, the guys were asking $800 to $1200. and they were as bad if not worse then mine. There are alot of 8 footers out there though.
If I was in your position, I would try to find a rust free bed from the southwest and have it shipped. It will cost about $400 to get it shipped, depending on where you are, and it will probably cost at least $400 to find a decent short bed. But you'll have that much trying to do all that work to your wasted bed...
A hole puncher from harbor freight is a good idea. I have had and used one for almost 10 years now. Love mine.Only gripe would be that I wish it puched a bigger hole.
Spot weld cutter.... dont cheap out here. Buy a blair. I have tried the harbor freight version and ended up tossing it in the trash after the fist hole.
You could allways spend the big bucks and buy a spot welder...
I need to break down and buy some different tongs, but I love this tool. I think I paid $80.00 for it at a local swap many many moons ago. I try to use it when ever I can.
