steering problems

Hello,
I just purchased a 1965 f100, runs very strong, however, when making turns the steering locks up a bit, and then pops, after the pop it will turn ok. what would this be?

Welcome to FTE

Worn steering parts: Draglink, left tie rod & right tie rod end / Assuming this '65 F100 is 2WD:

The left (drivers) side tie rod (C5TZ-3A131-A) attaches to the left spindle, t'other end is threaded.

An adjustable clamp threads to the left tie rod and to the right tie rod end (C5TZ-3A130-A) that connects to the draglink (C5TZ-3304-C).

Draglink connects to the right (passenger) side spindle and to the steering gears Pitman Arm.

Ball joints that are made as part of the tie rod, tie rod end and draglink wear, causing "loosy-goosy" steering.

C5TZ-3A130-A .. Right Tie Rod End / Obsolete

C5TZ-3A131-A .. Left Tie Rod / Obsolete

C5TZ-3304-C .. Draglink / Obsolete

Applications: 1965/72 F100 2WD / 1965/70 F250 2WD.

Available from NAPA and etc autoparts stores.

It will fix some of the problems, but there may be more.

Most likely the cab mounts are rusted out letting the cab move on the frame. When you turn the truck the rag joint coupling on the bottom of the steering column is binding.

I replaced all of my steering components on my 1965 F250.
Moog #DS737 Drag Link $100.99
Moog #DS736 Tie Rod $52.89
Moog #ES362R Tie Rod $34.79
Moog #ES362S Adjusting Sleeve $13.51

These are the part numbers for MY application. Check yours before ordering.
I also rebuilt the steering box, and replaced the rag joint.
Much better, and SAFER!!!

Not difficult, but will require a shop to align the front end when completed.

The thing is, before buying parts, the OP should take his truck to a front end shop and have the steering problems diagnosed.

OP will most likely need a 'pickle fork' to remove the draglink's ball joint from the Pitman Arm, right tie rod end's ball joint from the draglink.

I rebuilt my steering from the Steering wheel to the wheels. It only cost me about $600.00 for everything. I did have the column painted and replaced all wear items in it whether they really needed it or not. It helped a lot, but I was still getting some spongy feeling when I turned sharp corners. That was my cab supports. $1000 later, and that is gone, and now it steers like a dream. (Still not Power!!)

Rag joint

after veiwing the rag joint,on my 65 f100 , it is with out a doubt the problem, it looks to have a tear in it. Are these diffacult to change, looks like 2 bolts? can the new one go in only 1 way? what locks the steering shaft to the rag joint? and finally are there any tricks or problems in repacing the rag joint.

Thanks

C5TZ-3A525-A .. Steering Coupler (aka rag joint) / Obsolete

Applications: 1965 F100/250 2WD / 1966 F100/250 2WD before serial number 900,001.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 48 = 800-543-4959.

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 92 = 800-476-9653.

You can buy just the rubber disc from autoparts stores, but it can be a real b!tch to install.
