Sure seems like one of the auto manufacturers would put some technology into cruise control. If it would sense a hill and allow the speed to be reduced. Where the cruise would do what is best for mileage. Where it would sense the A/C is on and hot outside, so that it would not load the engine as much.... etc. Lots of technology could be adapted to make it more intelligent.
That's counter-intuitive to the idea of CC. I suppose it might be desirable in some cases if it prevents ruining the engine or transmission, or possibly a fuel economy setting, but I always hated the cars I owned if they couldn't maintain the speed I set them regardless of air conditioning, hills, whatever.
Thanks for everyone's input on the CC issue. This is all new to me so I have gained some knowledge and ready to head to Disney now with the TT next year.
Just towed 7k lb boat NC to South Florida. Used cruise all the way and never turned on Tow/Haul allowing the Torqshift manage everything else. Did have a 20 mile stretch on 4-lane with lights, then used Tow/Haul for acceleration and braking.
I think the real question is whether you have the 4 speed tranny and V10 or if you have the 6.0L with 5 speed torqshift.
For the 6.0/TS, I think towing with CC on (and Tow/Haul selected) is the way to go. I never have to pull it out of CC, unless I'm pulling more than a 6% grade climbing to the Eisenhower tunnel, or pulling a big trailer into a 35 mph headwind.
My opinion is that you are busy enough when towing. Being able to hold a steady speed without a lot of attention is a nice feature.
