ignition timing spout connector

So im looking to check my timing on an 89 5.0 . I looked at the spout connector. And its not even plugged in anywhere its capped off? How can I set my timing if thats not connected to anything?

That's it, it's just a jumper.

The SPOUT is a jumper that connects the PCM, engine computer, to the Ignition Control Module (ICM). It looks like this:


By removing the "jumper" you open the circuit between those two components. The PCM is no longer controlling the timing of the spark. That is how you set the base timing.
