About a year ago i had a jeasper shortblock rebuild installed,($10,000) at that time i had the headbolts upgraded and egr delete kit installed. The intaller used the original heads and and injectors. Im not sure if new lifters came with the rebuild or not. The engine ran fine for 50,000 miles and #3 bent two push roads and broke the rocker arm. I had the installer diagnose and repair. The engine went about 1500 miles and #3 did it again. This time i carreid it to the ford dealer who tore it down and concluded that #3 lift had malfuntioned and caused a mutlitude of problems, POSSIBLY damaging the cam. They wanted $17,000 to do a complete long block install and $14,000 for another short block.
My question is how difficlut is it for and old gas engine mechanic to rebuild this engine at a resonable and effective cost.
What should i be aware of?
Is there a good reference manual for step by step 6.0 rebuilding. I can do a gas engine in my sleep but diesels are a new territorty for me.
At this point i just want to patch the engine up in order to get rid of it.
Any help wil be greatly appreciated
Welcome to FTE Sstrans In reality, anyone can rebuild the engine, the only hold up is special tools you may have to beg, borrow or buy for a few things.
You may have cam damage, may not. The needle bearings will make their way down to the oil pan and can be picked up by the lower oil pump. If this happens, the front lower (low pressure oil pump) LPOP will be damaged which is housed in the front cover.
Let us know what damage is suspected, and we can steer you from that information.
i guess at this point in need to pull the heads and see what damage actually exist. So far i have only gone by what the dealer has told me.
If in fact the lifter is stuck, im assuming that the probability that the valve has been damaged is pretty good. What about damage to the cam?
Just trying to et teh darn thing patched up enough to get rid of it. This darn 6.0 has been NOTHING but problems since i have had it
yep. sounds too far in and too much trouble to be going in there. but i guess if u wan to keep the vehicle, u could turn it into a project truck and work on it bit by bit til u get it up again.
