i just recieved a 60$ 302 out of a stang w/ 99k miles. it was stored w/o the intake manifold, and heads. the cam was also taken out. so what should i do. i'm planning to swap this engine, if rebuilt, into a pre '85 stang or thunderbird. i'm going to carb the bitch. would it be feasible for myself, who is mechanically inclined, to rebuild this engine, w/ a PAW kit. i'm going to probably rebuild the whole block. i've never rebuilt an engine before (i'm 18) i know i should start sometime. but is there a good book that i should study and read before i attempt this project? any info would be helpful.
thanks
basic engine rebuilding is not hard as long as you have a few things. get your self a book on small block fords, it will contain alot of good info, plus torge specs you need to rebuild your engine.
read the book until you understand what your getting into.
tools- theers some basic tools you need and some specific tools also. torgue wrench, piston ring plyers ring compressor harmonic ballancer puller dead blow hammer a few micromiters engine stand engine crane ect.
dont buy cheap tools.
when buying parts for your engine dont buy the cheapest thing you find, you only get what you pay for.
find a machine shop and a good machine shop to do your work. take your time and dont rush things.
my first engine i rebuilt was a 64 292 and its still running today with 245000 miles on it.
its not hard to do but expensive if you need everything when your starting out. and the biggest thing you need to remember is... if you dont know ..ASK!
ok, thanks. i just picked up the heads, intake, cam, tubing, wireing today. i'm pickin up the block sometime next week. its an efi motor but im going to carb it. i got a holley carb w/ the deal. i think it needs to be rebuilt, but thats easy to do. i'll make sure that if i have a ques., i'll ask it here.
thanks again
